    Neytendasamtokin is an independent consumers' organization with head office in Reykjavík and a local office in Akureyri, the main city in the north of the country.

     

    Founded: 23 March 1953.

    Membership:  Anyone over 18 years of age can become a member of the Consumers’ Association and enjoy full rights provided they are free of debt to the Association. See: Registration form 

     

    Governing structure: The organization is directed by a board of 21, elected for a 2-year period. Each official voting district in the country gets representatives in the board according to the number of its inhabitants. See: Board members

     

    Membership fee: Annual membership fees is determined by the governing board. See: Price list  (Icelandic: árgjald)

     

    Finances: Membership fees 65%, publication 15%, state 15%, local authorities 3%, unions 2%.

     

    Publications: Neytendabladid (The Consumers' Magazine) 4 times a year (free to members), books, brochures, posters.

     

    Main areas of work:

    Promoting and protecting the interests of the consumers.

    Representing the consumers and undertaking comparative testing of consumer goods and services.

    Stating consumers' views to the authorities, trade, industry etc.

    Giving assistance in individual cases.

    Consumers' education and information.

    Tenants assistance?

    Neytendasamtökin run an assistance service for tenants, informing them of their rights and assisting when disputes with landlords arise.

     

    Tenants can call on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30-14:00 or visit the office from 12:30-15:00.
